A new industry guidance document has been published by the Industry Competence Committee (ICC), providing organisations with practical advice on how to effectively manage the competence of individuals working under their control.
The document, Setting Expectations on Competence Management, outlines the principles organisations should follow to meet the competence requirements set out within Part 2A of the Building Regulations 2010 and the Higher Risk Buildings (Management of Safety Risks etc.) (England) Regulations 2023.
The guidance places a strong emphasis on ensuring individuals possess the appropriate skills, knowledge, experience, and behaviours required for their roles. It also highlights the importance of having clear policies, defined responsibilities, ongoing training, and effective processes in place to support competence development and compliance.
Developed through collaboration between professional bodies, regulators, and industry organisations, the guidance provides practical examples and case studies to help organisations assess and improve their existing competence management frameworks.
The publication reflects a growing focus across the built environment on raising professional standards, improving accountability, and ensuring that individuals are appropriately qualified and supported to undertake their responsibilities safely and effectively.
At Firesafe, competence and continuous professional development are fundamental to the services we provide. Through ongoing manufacturer training, industry accreditation, technical development, and quality assurance processes, we are committed to maintaining the highest standards of passive fire protection across every project we deliver.
As building safety regulations continue to evolve, ensuring competence at every stage of design, installation, inspection, and maintenance remains essential to creating safer buildings and protecting occupants.
